As we head into May, Helston is once again building up to another Flora Day, but that isn't the only exciting event happening in town this month. Helston is now bracing itself for what could be the most exciting month of May for quite some time.
On Wednesday 2nd May Helston's new Business Improvement Partnership will be launched. Led by the Town Manager Jonathan Birkett and the town's businesses themselves, the partnership will serve to give traders a voice and let them be involved in decisions to improve the town centre. On Tuesday 8th May it is of course Flora Day. Preparations are in full swing and the day itself promises to be another spectacular event, let's just hope the weather is kind. We'll be taking plenty of photos throughout the day so check back here to browse through our galleries from 9th May.
On Tuesday 15th May Helston will get a new mayor. Current mayor John Boase will have completed his two year term of office and mayor-elect Jonathan Radford-Gaby is due to be sworn in with Councillor Mike Thomas his deputy. This year however the mayor choosing ceremony will take place in the evening for the first time.
Later that week, on Friday 18th May, all eyes will be on Helston as the Olympic flame touches down in the UK from Greece at RNAS Culdrose. The flame is being flown in on a specially chartered British Airways flight, more details on that here.
The following day, Saturday 19th May, the Olympic torch will begin its journey around the UK at Land's End and will pass through Helston that morning. It will reach us at 10.07am. For details on the route click here. Throughout the day there will also be a full programme of entertainment at the Old Cattle Market.
Finally, in May we should find out whether Helston's Portas Pilot application has been successful. So far, over 10,000 people have watched Helston's Towneoke video application on You Tube. That makes it the most watched of all the Portas Pilot films online. It's even caught the eye of Mary Portas herself who commented on Twitter saying: "Oh gosh and this one honestly made my eyes water. No idea why they need the money but I love the energy in Helston..." The exact date of the announcement is still unknown, but watch this space.
