Helston's town councillors will tomorrow night (Thursday 23rd February) be choosing who will become the next mayor. However, despite agreeing to elect all new mayors in public from now on, the vote will instead be kept secret.

It's been a turbulent year for the council. It was twelve months ago that some members tried to oust current mayor John Boase. As had always been the case the vote was held in private but given the unusual circumstances that sparked much criticism. It resulted in the vote being held again in public which Mr Boase subsequently won.

In October last year it was decided that publically voting for a new mayor ensured the council remained transparent and it was decided this would become the norm. At the town council meeting last week however, councillors decided that while nominations would be done in public, voting would be done in secret to help heal any rifts that have arisen over the past few months.

Current deputy mayor Jonathan Radford-Gaby is likely to be nominated, while Councillor Ronnie Williams has announced that he is also putting his name forward to take on the role. Whoever wins will take up the position in May.

Tomorrow night's meeting will be held in The Guildhall at 7pm.
