The lead up to this year's mayor choosing ceremony in Helston hasn't exactly been smooth but today John Boase was sworn in for his second term in office. The occasion has hopefully brought an end to what has been an eventful couple of months for Helston Town Council.

What should have been a simple case of voting Mr Boase in for a second year, as is tradition, turned out to be a long and drawn out process. In February he was denied a second term after Councillor Niall Devenish was put forward as a new candidate and voted in by fellow councillors at a meeting held behind closed doors.

The decision caused uproar in the town and led to a further meeting in March. The vote was taken again, this time in public, and Mr Boase emerged the winner.

Today, as the town clock struck Midday, members of the council ware called upon to formally elect the new town mayor. It was notable that the councillors who voted against John Boase at the public meeting were absent from today's proceedings. Ronnie Williams, Vicki Matthew, Wendy Radford-Gaby, Jonathan Radford-Gaby and Mike Thomas were there however and their votes were unanimously in favour.

The newly re-elected Mayor then proposed that Jonathan Radford-Gaby be appointed as Deputy Mayor, which was seconded by Councillor Thomas.

As in previous years pupils from Helston's schools attended the ceremony along with representatives of a number of local organisations. Afterwards the Mayor and Mayoress led a procession down Coinagehall Street to the British Legion where a buffet reception was laid on for guests.

Why is he so unpopular? Even though he got re-elected it seems as if he doesn't have a lot of support...

Out of ( I think) twelve Councillors, five voted for him.

Not exactly an overwhelming show of support, in fact less than half the Council.

About time this bloke got the message.
