Helston's first Street Market draws in the crowds.

FOR the first time in a long time Helston's main streets could be described as somewhat 'bustling' on a Saturday morning today, after the local traders hit the streets to offer their goods in preparation for Christmas.

No-one can deny the first ever street market drew in a crowd of residents, despite critisms that it wasn't well promoted.

The market was arranged after the popular and frequent Continental Market pulled out of an arranged date in the town, and after unsuccessfully offering pitches to exisiting market stall holders Helston Town Council opened the opportunity up to local shop owners.

There were rumoured to be around 33 stalls attending. In reality there was more like 20, but still the event seemed popular with those lining Coinagehall Street.

On offer were craft items from Heathercraft, homemade goods from local business Day Dreams, handmade jewellery from the young people at Furry Youth Cafe and plants and flowers to name just a few.

We will have to wait and see whether this will become a more frequent event in the future.

If you haven't been to the market yet (and you're reading this on Saturday) there is still time to bag some bargains for Christmas!

We had a stall on the day and it did have the appearance of being busy.

A lot of people were not spending their money but just window shopping. Although saying that our shop was busier than normal.

We looked at the day as more of a publicity day for us, an opportunity for people to see what us smaller independent retailers stock.

I think it would take a few more similar days for the publicity to get through to people, some people were still expecting the continental market.

I don't know if any of the stalls made loads of money on the day apart from the birdseed man. We will man the stall ourselves next time to keep the overheads down and perhaps open the sides to our gazebo more saw we are more visible.

I was in Town about 11.00 AM, and I have to say the street market was fantastic.

I read in the Helston Packet that it was organised at short notice by Councillor Swift when the previous market suddenly cancelled.

Well, I have to say this Councillor did a brilliant job.

It was busy, vibrant and drew a lot of people into Town.

Thats exactly what being a Councillor should be about, working quietly behind the scenes to do things in your Town. Its not all about telling everyone how great you are, its actually getting the job done without any fuss or publicity.

Well done to Councillor Swift, if only we had more like you, and less with to quote "inflated but fragile egos".

    From our point of view.

It was eventually a good day. Strangely breakfast was a quiet period which isn't usual for a Saturday. By Noon we had kicked off and had a good lunch that made up for the poor start.

A couple of regular stall holders who we see for coffee's suggesed they too were having good days. Hopefully the other stall holders had good days too and with a little bit more preparation and publicity it could become a regular and bigger.
