A meeting's been held to discuss the future of Helston Folk Museum. Currently run by Cornwall Council, funding is in place for this year but it's not yet known what will happen after that.

This week local stakeholders, including Cornwall Council members, representatives from Helston Town Council; the Friends of the Museum; Helston Community College and the Cornwall Museums Group got together and started looking at potential future options for the museum beyond 2012.

It was noted at the meeting that Cornwall Council might not be the best organisation to operate the museum in the long-term and that a review of other possibilities would be useful. This is now under review and a working party will meet again in mid-July when information on key areas such as the condition of the museum building and alternative operating models will be considered.

Afterwards Councillor Judith Haycock sought to reassure local people that this isn't the end for Helston Folk Museum, saying: "The people of Helston realise what a valuable asset the Museum is. I wish to assure everyone that there is no intention to close the Museum and in fact this review is an exciting opportunity to look at how we can build on its strengths and ensure its success for the future."

nooooooo it can't close, the museum is fantastic. I don't know what visitor numbers are like so can't comment on that but it is a great asset for the town and absolutely should be kept open.

Does it get the visitors? Without wanting to sound glib, if nobody's going then close it and use the money elsewhere in the community.
