358 cattle at market day

KIVELLS report an entry of 358 cattle, 42 cull cows and 509 sheep at the latest Hallworthy market.
In the cattle pens, trade remained very fast with a top call of £1,200 for Eddy Cowling, with J Cobbledick, Old Wit, at £1,094 (171ppk) and Messrs Hutchings at £1,035.
The overall average for the finished cattle stood at £1,027.30 (161.94ppk).
In the store pens trade was magnificent, with a top of £1,155 for Charollais from CJ Greenaway, St Breward, with others at £1,100 and £1,035 for KC Hutchings.
The overall average for 341 stores stood at £604.72.
Best cows and calves came from Bob Cowle, Helston, at £1,080 with plenty around the £1,000 mark.
In the sheep pens just shy of 300 cull ewes saw the best to £112 from James Eustice Farms, St Ervan, with JP Menhinick, Burniere, at £110 and John Gardener, Buttsbeare, at £97.50.
The overall average stood at £78.07.
An entry of 128 ewes with lambs at foot saw a top call of £201 for Miss B Bluett, Bilbury, at £200, with an overall average of £131.02.
The May organic cattle sale saw mainly younger cattle forward, but with plenty of buyers present a top of £955 (twice) was registered, for South Devon heifers from HJ Stephens.
