Helston's high street has has taken a massive hit since the recession with 2011 seeing many of the most frequented stores in the town close their doors.

With smaller independent stores struggling with small numbers of shoppers and chain-stores pulling out of the town left, right and centre, what is the future for Helston?

Recent news that Peacocks has collapsed into administration means that very soon, there could be yet another gaping hole in the shopping centre that was once - believe it or not - quite bustling.

At 24 (and 3/4) I have memories of visiting the town with family members for a look around. Wondering around Woolworths, the arcade and John Menzies was often something I quite enjoyed with my Nan on a Saturday morning.

I know I was particularly young at the time, but I never recall Helston being as quiet as I witnessed on Saturday. On what I would consider to be a shop's best trading day, I saw just four people as a bimbled from the top of Meneage Street to the bottom of Coinagehall Street, shamefully purchasing nothing from our local shops.

What are your memories of shopping in Helston? Did the town always struggle? Were there ever bustling streets on a Saturday afternoon? Share your memories here, by clicking 'Comment' below.
