Helston Music and Performing Arts Academy Opening

Helston Community College is launching its exciting new Music and Performing Arts Academy and opening its doors to the community for the first time this month.  At the launch event families will have the chance to tour the music studios and try out a range of creative activities including street dance, classical, circus skills, voice coaching, jazz, big band, rock, recording and mixing and a range of instruments.

The College is working in partnership with Cornwall Learning Music to develop a new model for music and arts education in the county. Head Teacher Dr Pat McGovern says: “At Helston Community College we have the firm belief that all children should have the opportunity to develop their talents and that creativity is the essence of good education.

“The Academy will provide a centre of excellence for Cornwall and the community offering students the opportunity to take part in a wide range of extra curricular music and performing arts activities from vocal/instrumental lessons to more informal experiences and one-off events”

Sharon Longden, Head of Cornwall Learning adds: “We believe the Academy will become a model of good practice, attracting the best teachers and expanding providing for the benefit of young people and the wider community”.

One of the exciting developments is the introduction of “Have-a-Go” sessions, where pupils will have the chance to try out a new discipline over 6 weeks.  There will be the opportunity for students to build new relationships, develop new skills and share or perform what they have learned.

The open day will take place at the South Site Music Suite, Helston Community College on Thursday 16th September 2010 from 4-6 pm.
