How to read the tables

School league table

• %Eng +Maths is the Government's new performance measure for schools. It shows the percentage of pupils achieving level four - the standard expected by the Government - in both English and Maths. Where two schools tie, the one with the higher English score ranks first. If it is still a tie, the school with more pupils is placed higher.
• %Eng is the percentage achieving level four in English.Where two schools tie, the school with more pupils is placed higher.
• %Maths is the percentage achieving level four in Maths. Where two schools tie, the school with more pupils is placed higher.
• %Sci is the percentage achieving level four in science. Where two schools tie, the school with more pupils is placed higher.
• Total is the aggregate score, the combined total of the English, Maths and science figures. Where two schools tie, the one with the higher English score ranks first. If there is still a tie, the school with more pupils is placed higher.
• Pupils is the number of pupils eligible to take national curriculum tests.

A "-" symbol means no information was supplied. An "A" means a mal-administration investigation is underway or the results have been annulled amid suspicions of maladministration.

Achievement at level four shows the percentage achieving the standard expected by the Government in the three core subjects.

Achievement at level five shows the percentage achieving the next level up in the national curriculum testing system in the three core subjects.

The points score is intended to reflect the attainment of all pupils, not just those reaching level four or five. The number of points assigned to each level is 33 for level five, 27 for level four, 21 for level three and 15 for level two and below.

The contextual value-added score aims to isolate the "school effect" and show how effective schools are at raising standards. Schools' results are weighted to take account of factors outside its control, such as the achievement of pupils on entry and the number of pupils eligible for free school meals. Schools where pupils did as well as expected score 100. Each point above or below 100 roughly equals a term's progress gained or lost.

Absence shows the percentage of half-days missed by pupils with or without authorisation. Persistent absentees are defined as pupils who miss at least 20 percent of school.

A "-" symbol means no information was supplied. An "-" means a mal-administration investigation is underway or the results have been annulled amid suspicions of maladministration.

Schools with 10 or fewer pupils eligible to take the tests are included in the tables for completeness but no results are reported for them. Independent schools, which may not take the tests, are excluded.
