Forgotten Law Could End Cross Street Traffic Woes

Traffic chaos in Helston’s Cross Street could soon be a thing of the past. It’s been noted in recent months that large lorries are using the narrow street as a cut through as their satnav instructs them to do so. This has caused endless trouble for motorists and misery for residents. It’s perhaps not a coincidence that quite a few of the properties on that street are for sale.

Councillors have been looking into a solution to the problem and have now discovered an old, forgotten law from the early eighties which stipulates no vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are allowed to travel through a large area of Helston. Exceptions should only be made for those making deliveries in town.

They have also noted that other towns with similar problems have had signs put up warning lorry drivers not to take note of the satnav in certain areas. It’s hoped similar signs could also be used in Helston.

I’m glad something is being done to sort this. Cross Street is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest streets in Helston and certainly wasn’t designed to have huge trucks driving up and down it. Lorry drivers who don’t know the area wouldn’t know not to use Cross Street so clear signage must be the way forward.
