Petrol prices have gone up again, bringing the cost of filling your car to an all time high. It makes the commute to work that much more expensive but there’s a growing trend that may help bring it down – liftsharing. It may not be something you’ve considered before but the idea is catching on and in the Helston area alone there are well over 250 journeys to a variety of destinations that you could share.

We’ve actually just come to the end of the first ever liftshare week which saw the launch of a campaign to help you find out about who else in your area may be going your way. A quick search for Helston on the website www.liftshare.com brings up details of numerous journeys you could share. There are also plenty of destinations from local towns in Cornwall to places like Bristol, London and Wolverhampton.
Liftsharing is being promoted as not only a way of cutting down your petrol costs, but also a way of helping the environment while making a few friends along the way. Comments from those already taking advantage of it are on the liftshare website and include:
I've always liked the idea of lift sharing but always thought there'd be nobody going from my smallish town to anywhere near my work, in a different smallish town over 30km away... But I was wrong! There were THREE people who drive virtually past my work, and one who drives right past my house too!” Michael
“If I couldn't liftshare my daily commute, I would be unable to make my commute at all! Liftsharing saves me ten hours and £40 per week - or over 450 hours and £1.8k annually. On top of this, my liftsharing buddy and I are now good friends; his wife did the flowers at my wedding and my wife and I have baby-sat their kids.” Thomas
The scheme also means even if you don’t drive, you may be able to work further afield without having to rely on public transport. If you can find someone to tag along with, you need only pay towards the cost of petrol.
Is this something you would consider? Do you already lift share? Let us know below.

I live in the sticks so whenever I travel into town or further afield I try and liftshare. I also pick up hitchhikers as I remember when I was young and used to hitch a ride all over the UK and abroad. Lift sharing is a great thing to do.
